CREATIVE EDGE · BRANDING
By Steve Raia · November 6, 2026
If your brand feels fine, that’s your first warning sign.
Fine is easy to live with. The website still works, the deck still opens, and nobody’s complained about the logo. Your business has moved on, and your brand is still introducing the 2019 version.
Here are five clues it’s time for a refresh.
1. Engagement has flatlined
Your posts look fine, but engagement is slipping. If the people you want to reach keep scrolling past, take a look at your visuals and messaging. Would you stop for the sixth consecutive “We’re excited to announce”?
2. Your story changes depending on who’s telling it
Your website says one thing. Sales says another. The capabilities deck appears to have been briefed separately.
When teams tell different versions of the same story, customers have to piece together what you do and why it matters. A shared message and a cohesive visual system give everyone something to work from.
3. Your visuals don’t match your growth
Your product, team, or offering has evolved. Does your brand show it? If the business looks the same from the outside as it did five years ago, prospects may assume it’s stayed there, too.
4. You’re blending in
Put your homepage next to three competitors’ and cover the logos. Can you still pick yours out? If everybody has the same blue gradient and promises to “unlock what’s next,” you may be making it a little too easy to forget who said it.
5. Your team isn’t using the brand
If people skip the templates and make their own materials, ask what’s getting in their way. Maybe the approved layout falls apart when real copy goes in. A good brand system makes the everyday work easier. It should be faster to use the template than to start over.
If a few of these sound familiar, look at where the brand is falling short and what people still recognize and use. A refresh can sharpen the message, update the visuals, and give your team better tools while keeping what already works.
I hope this gave you something to think about. More from the Steve Blender soon.
To be continued.
